HOLWELL FREE RANGE SADDLEBACK PORK

At Holwell Farm itself, the hog rules. Here you will find any number and size of pig grazing outdoors and in the woods; infact the area where the pigs graze is fondly regarded as “Pig Heaven”. The breed selected for the terrain, altitude, climate and vegetation here is one of this country’s oldest and most distinctive breeds; the British Saddleback. Now a “rare breed”, the Saddleback is distinguished by its large lop ears and the white belt wrapped around its body – we’re also into stripes at Holwell as the herd of cattle are largely belted Galloway.

The Saddleback has always been raised for its excellent pork and bacon. The sows are wonderful mothers, giving lots of milk to their huge litters, which average 10. The piglets are weaned around 12 weeks, depending on the time of year and forage on a natural diet. The meat produced is a distinctive, rich flavour and as the only part of a pig you don’t use is the squeak, there is a wide selection of cut available, including of course the sausages and burgers.

Other produce direct from Holwell Farm includes Free Range Eggs from our rare breed chickens.   We also rear the calves that will eventually be fattened and finished by our neighbouring farmer in the Widecombe Valley and we only use native breeds such as South Devon and Galloway.  We also boast our own magnificent Belted Galloway Bull called Popacatapetal; after the volcano as he erupts regularly !!

WIDECOMBE “BRED & FED” BEEF FROM LIZWELL FARM
We are the 2nd generation of Mortimore's to have farmed at Lizwell, in the wonderful valley of Widecombe, having taken over the tenancy from my farther who acquired it in 1952. We have always loved and appreciated the environment and landscape that we share with the domesticated and non-domesticated wildlife that surrounds us. Unfortunately views don't pay bills! Feeling that our quality South Devon and Angus cross beef was losing it's identity on the supermarket shelves we decided that we needed to get our product to the customs who appreciated it . Hence the introduction of Widecombe Bred and Fed Beef.

Our cows suckle their calves until they are at least 8 months old when they are weaned and fed on home grown forage. No purchased feed is given to our cattle, their lifetime diet is grown in the Widecombe Valley. Many of our cattle are lucky enough graze the Common Land surrounding the Widecombe Valley during the lush summer months. So we hope you can enjoy our beef in the knowledge that it has been produced in the caring and natural way it deserves! "A Lizwell Life is a Happy Life".

 BOWDEN FARM LAMB, SCORRITON, DARTMOOR
Bowden Farm is situated on the Southern foothills of Dartmoor and has been successfully farmed by the Ashford family for almost 50 years.

Dartmoor has long been recognised as not just an area of outstanding natural beauty but an area that for generations has been carefully created and managed for the production and rearing of healthy, quality livestock.

The Breeding Flock are predominantly Scotch Black-face ewes; traditionally a mountain breed; slow maturing, sufficiently hardy to withstand Dartmoor’s inclement weather and ideally equipped to forage the abundant rough grazing on offer.

The Scotch Black-face ewes are mated to either Scotch Black-face rams to produce flock replacements or Texel rams to produce the ideal “Finished” lamb, with minimal fat.

Together with other Tor to Tor meat producers, Bowden Farm is conveniently situated just 4 miles from one of Devon’s few remaining, “family run” abattoirs at Ashburton which means that the animals just make 1 short, stress-free journey in their lifetime.

 FRENCHBEER FARM TURKEYS FROM CHAGFORD
These Bronze Free range & White Barn turkeys are simply the best; richly flavoured, moist and with plenty of white meat. The turkeys are reared for us in granite barns by farming friends on the edge of Dartmoor. Mike & Christine together with their four children run a traditional beef & sheep hill farm using methods that ensure the landscape is maintained for future generations.
